Author’s practical guidance
You hand it over because they are already falling apart
Source named in the book: research on young children and mobile device use (Radesky)
A screen stops a meltdown faster than anything else you own.
Say this now
“You're having a hard time. I'm staying here.”
The offer is you first. The screen is not the first move.
“We'll watch something after you've calmed down.”
Keeps it available without making it the way out.
Do this
- Wait out the loud part first, even ninety seconds. The order is what they learn.
- Offer the screen after the crying stops, not during it, so it is not the thing that stopped it.
- Keep one other route working — water, outside, a lap — so it is not the only one.
- Notice the hard hours and plan them.
- Use it on the genuinely bad days without guilt. The pattern is what counts, not the once.
Avoid this
- Handing it over mid-scream. The timing teaches that screaming is what produced it.
- "Do you want the show?" during the upset. Turns a feeling into a transaction.
- Using it every time, then wondering why nothing else works. Nothing else got practice.
If it repeats
If the screen has become the only thing that ends an upset, do not ban it. Add one other route and use it first, every time, for two weeks. It will work badly at first, because the screen is practiced and this is not.
Why the book suggests this
A screen stops a meltdown faster than anything else you own. That is the problem with it. The upset ends, but it ends because attention was captured, not because the child did anything with the feeling. Nothing was practiced.
Work on how young children use devices to calm down keeps finding the same pattern: the children handed a screen most often when upset are the ones who settle least easily without one. Which way that runs is not settled, and it may well run both. The practical reading holds either way — a screen is a reasonable tool sometimes, and a poor one as the only tool.
