Some of what your child watches is built so that it does not stop.
Say this now
“I'm stopping it before the next one starts.”
You own the ending, because the thing removed it.
“This one doesn't stop by itself, so I stop it.”
True, and it takes the blame off both of you.
Do this
- Turn off anything that plays the next one automatically, in the settings, before you need it.
- Choose what they watch in advance rather than letting a queue choose it as you go.
- Stop it during the gap, not thirty seconds into the next one.
- Watch the last two minutes with them.
- Say out loud that the thing has no ending — a four-year-old can hold that, and it helps.
Avoid this
- Blaming the child for not stopping. They were not given a place to stop.
- "Just one more" when there is no boundary between them. One more has no edges here.
- Letting it run while you decide what to do. It is deciding for you.
If it repeats
If you cannot turn the feature off, build the ending outside it: a timer you both hear, or a fixed number of episodes counted out loud before it starts. The point is that the ending comes from somewhere, not nowhere.
Why the book suggests this
Some of what your child watches is built so that it does not stop. The next one begins before the last has finished, and the seam a child could have used as an ending is deliberately removed. Nothing about that is accidental.
The features that hold a small child's attention are the same features that make stopping hard. That is not a side effect of the design, and a three-year-old has no defense against them. When you fight the ending, you are not fighting your child. You are fighting something built by adults to be hard to leave.
