The room got too loud

Rothbart's work describes reactivity along three lines: how little it takes to set a child off, how strongly they respond and how long it takes them to come back down.
Say this now
“It's too loud in here. We're going outside for a minute.”
Names the cause as the room rather than the child and states the plan instead of asking.
“You can come back in when you want to. Or we can go home.”
Both doors stay open. Leaving stops being a punishment and becomes one of two normal choices.
Do this
- Get them out to the edge of it fast, before the response reaches full size.
- Say less on the way out — words are more input.
- Give it longer than feels necessary; coming down takes them more time than it takes you.
- Scout the quiet corner before you need it.
- Go early to busy places, when the room is still filling up rather than full.
Avoid this
- "Look, nobody else is crying." — the comparison lands as a verdict on them.
- Explaining why the room is fine — reasoning needs a brake that is not working yet.
- Staying longer to build tolerance — past a certain point they are no longer learning anything.
If it repeats
If the same kind of place empties them every time, shorten the visit before it goes wrong rather than after. Twenty good minutes and a planned exit teach them more than ninety that end on the floor.
Why the book suggests this
Rothbart's work describes reactivity along three lines: how little it takes to set a child off, how strongly they respond and how long it takes them to come back down. A highly reactive child is not choosing any of the three. They are the settings they were born with.
The brake — what Rothbart calls effortful control — is still thin at three and keeps developing for years. So the response arrives at full size with almost nothing in the way of it, which is why it looks like it came from nowhere.
