Say this now
“You can say hello when you're ready.”
Takes the audience off. Said once, quietly, to the child rather than about them.
“He'll come and find you in a bit. He warms up slowly.”
Said to the adult, in front of the child. It explains without labeling and takes the pressure off both.
Do this
- Brief relatives beforehand: no questions for the first ten minutes.
- Let them arrive behind you rather than being presented.
- Give them a task — carrying the bag, opening the door — instead of a greeting.
- Skip the goodbye kiss if that is the part they dread.
- Let the visit be the practice; they usually talk by the end of it.
Avoid this
- "Say hello. Say it. Say hello to grandma." — each repetition adds an audience.
- "She's just shy." — said over their head, it becomes the label they take on.
- Rewarding the eventual hello — turns a greeting into a performance with a price.
TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR IF
- They speak at home and never in one setting, for a month or more.
- The silence is holding steady rather than easing.
- They cannot ask for the bathroom, for help or for food.
- They avoid the place itself, not only the talking.
- Speech at home is also late or hard for outsiders to follow.

Being watched while it happens makes it worse, and a room of adults waiting for an answer is the most watched a small child gets. The silence is not rudeness and it is not fear of the person. It is what their reaction to unfamiliarity looks like from outside.
