The evening that ran late
Source named in the book: temperament, rhythmicity and adaptability (Chess & Thomas)
Chess and Thomas described rhythmicity — how regular a child's own clock is — as a trait they arrive with.
Say this now
“It's late, so tonight it's the short version. Same steps.”
Keeps the shape and cuts the length — the trade that works for a child who needs the order.
“Straight from the car to pajamas. Then one story.”
Gives the plan before you are through the door, while they can still hear it.
Do this
- Keep every step and shorten each one — two minutes of bath still counts.
- Do the routine in the room where they sleep, not wherever you land.
- Start it in the car or the hallway, with the lights low at home.
- Expect the settling itself to take longer, and plan your own evening around it.
- Go back to the normal time tomorrow rather than balancing one late night with another.
Avoid this
- Skipping the routine to catch up on time — you save ten minutes and lose forty at the door.
- "It's late, so no story tonight." — the story is the part that settles them.
- Apologizing for the late night on the way home — it tells them tonight is an exception with no rules.
If it repeats
If ordinary late nights cost two bad nights each time, that is information about this child, not a training problem. Saying so out loud to the people who plan your weekends will save more nights than anything you do at the bedroom door.
Why the book suggests this
Chess and Thomas described rhythmicity — how regular a child's own clock is — as a trait they arrive with. Some absorb a shifted evening and go down as usual. Others run narrow, and a night forty minutes off produces a child who cannot sleep at all.
Adaptability sits alongside it. A slow-to-adapt child needs the sequence more than the timing — the same steps in the same order will land them, late or not, while skipping straight to bed leaves nothing to follow.
