Author’s practical guidance
The lovey, the light, the open door
Source named in the book: the transitional object (Winnicott)
Winnicott's term for the bear, the cloth or the one particular blanket was the transitional object: a thing the child owns that stands in for the adult who is not there.
Say this now
“Bear stays with you all night. He's in charge of the bed.”
Gives the object a role out loud. A child who hears it repeated reaches for it instead of for you.
“Door open this much. Same as always.”
Makes the setting a fact rather than a nightly negotiation.
Do this
- Buy a second identical one now and rotate them so both smell right.
- Write the settings down — door width, which light, which side. Anyone can reproduce them.
- Keep the light dim and warm, and out of their line of sight.
- Wash the lovey in the morning, never at bedtime, and never both at once.
- Take the object everywhere they sleep, and the settings list too.
Avoid this
- "You don't need that old thing." — that item is doing your job at 2 a.m.
- Washing it on a Tuesday without warning — the smell is part of the object.
- Changing the light or the door each night to see what works — the changing is the problem.
If it repeats
If the list keeps growing — a specific song, a specific cup, your watch on the shelf — stop adding and freeze it. A child who needs six conditions does not sleep better than one who needs two. They just have more that can go missing.
Why the book suggests this
Winnicott's term for the bear, the cloth or the one particular blanket was the transitional object: a thing the child owns that stands in for the adult who is not there. It is not a weakness. It is the first version of self-comfort, and it belongs to them rather than to you.
The night light and the angle of the door work the same way, with one difference: they are conditions you control. A bear travels; a hall light at exactly the right width does not, and a night away from home becomes a search for a setting nobody wrote down.
