Author’s practical guidance
"You're spoiling him" at the kitchen table
Source named in the book: follow-up of parent-run sleep plans (Price)
Every generation was told something different about children and sleep, and each was told it with complete confidence.
Say this now
“It's working for us. I'll let you know if it stops.”
Ends the conversation without a debate and without conceding anything.
“You can do it your way in the day. Bedtime is ours.”
Gives them a real place to be useful and keeps the hour that must stay consistent.
Do this
- Decide in advance which two rules you will hold in front of other people.
- Let the daytime be theirs and do not audit it.
- Have one sentence ready and use the same one every time.
- Ask them what they did — the question ends more arguments than an answer.
- Keep the plan off the table as a subject for debate.
Avoid this
- Explaining the research to a relative at ten at night — nobody was ever persuaded at that hour.
- Changing what you do because of the comment — the comment changes again next week.
- "That's not how we do it now." — it turns a disagreement into a verdict on their parenting.
If it repeats
If the comments come from someone who has your child overnight, that is a different problem and worth a proper conversation in daylight. Hand over the sequence, ask them to run it, and treat it as a request between adults rather than a correction.
Why the book suggests this
Every generation was told something different about children and sleep, and each was told it with complete confidence. The advice your mother got was as firm as the advice you get now — worth remembering in both directions.
What the follow-up research supports is narrower than either side claims: children whose parents ran a planned approach and children whose parents did not looked the same years later. That finding does not settle the argument at the table — it just means nobody there is harming the child, including you.
