Author’s practical guidance
Two bites in, announces "all done," then asks for food twenty minutes later
Source named in the book: satiety responsiveness in children (Fisher)
A young child's sense of fullness is still an unreliable narrator — the "all done" at two bites is usually an honest report of the moment, not a strategy, even when real hunger follows twenty minutes later.
Say this now
“Okay, all done for now. Your plate will still be here.”
Accepts the report without an argument.
“You're hungry again — let's go back to what was on your plate.”
Reconnects the new hunger to the same meal, not a new one.
Do this
- Leave the original plate available for a reasonable window after the meal ends.
- Avoid immediately offering a different, more appealing food.
- Notice whether this clusters at one particular meal.
- Keep your own reaction low-key both times — the "done" and the "hungry again."
- Give it a few weeks before assuming it is a fixed pattern.
Avoid this
- "You said you were done, so you're done." — turns an honest, if inconsistent, signal into a trap.
- Making them wait until the next full meal, no matter what — treats real hunger as a consequence to be earned.
- Offering only low-effort snack foods the second time — quietly teaches that saying "done" leads to something more exciting.
If it repeats
If this happens at nearly every meal for months, it is still unlikely to be strategic — some children read fullness late for years. It is a pattern to work around, not a rule to break.
Why the book suggests this
A young child's sense of fullness is still an unreliable narrator — the "all done" at two bites is usually an honest report of the moment, not a strategy, even when real hunger follows twenty minutes later. Fisher's work found this kind of quick, inconsistent signaling is normal and tends to smooth out with age, not with correction.
The temptation is to treat the second request as proof the first was fake, but punishing it teaches a child to distrust their own signals rather than read them better — the opposite of the skill this stage is meant to build.
