Author’s practical guidance

The same food causes hives, swelling or vomiting more than once

Source named in the book: AAP guidance on food allergy and intolerance

A single upset stomach or an odd rash can come from a dozen ordinary things — a bug, a new soap, a coincidence.

Say this now

Option 1
“Your body is telling us something, and we're going to listen to it.”

Validates the symptom without alarming them further.

Option 2
“We're going to figure this out with the doctor.”

Keeps the plan concrete and shared.

Do this

  • Write down what was eaten before each reaction, including hidden ingredients where possible.
  • Note the timing and the specific symptoms every time, not just the memorable ones.
  • Take a photo of any visible reaction, hives fade before an appointment, a photo doesn't.
  • Call the pediatrician promptly, don't wait for a third occurrence.
  • Avoid the suspected food until you've talked to a doctor, without cutting others "just in case."

Avoid this

  • "You're being too sensitive." — dismisses a physical symptom as an attitude problem.
  • Continuing to serve the food "to get them used to it" — the opposite of what's needed if a true reaction is involved.
  • Guessing at the cause and cutting several foods at once — makes the trigger harder to pin down later.

TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR IF

  • The same food causes a reaction two or more times.
  • A reaction includes facial swelling or trouble breathing — call emergency services.
  • Vomiting or diarrhea reliably follows a specific food.
  • A rash or hives appear within hours of a specific food.
Why the book suggests this

A single upset stomach or an odd rash can come from a dozen ordinary things — a bug, a new soap, a coincidence. A repeated reaction to the same specific food is a different kind of pattern, and it is the body's signal, not the child's opinion.

Food allergy and intolerance reactions range from mild to serious, and can change over time. Reading a repeated reaction as a food preference delays an answer a simple test or referral can usually provide.
