Awake at the end of every cycle

Source named in the book: signaled waking and self-settling (Sadeh)

Sleep runs in cycles, and at the end of each one everybody comes near the surface.

Say this now

Option 1
“You can put yourself back. I'm here in the morning.”

Says the job is theirs and the reunion is certain.

Option 2
“Same bed, same bear, same light — all night.”

Names what will still be true at two in the morning, while they can take it in.

Do this

  • Put them down awake at the start of the night, even for the last minute of it.
  • Keep the room identical from lights out to morning: same sound, same light, same door.
  • Run any sound all night or not at all.
  • Give them what they can restore themselves — a lovey, a spare pacifier, water in reach.
  • Work on the start of the night, not on your response at two in the morning.

Avoid this

  • Rocking them fully to sleep and then moving them — the room they wake in is not the room they left.
  • Adding a new sleep aid every few nights — each one becomes another thing that has to be restored.
  • "This one just wakes a lot." — they surface like everyone else. The question is what comes next.
If it repeats

If two weeks of the same room and the same start change nothing, note the wakings against the clock for a few nights. Fixed times point at the schedule. A scatter points at something in the room — light, noise, temperature or a sibling turning over.

Why the book suggests this

Sleep runs in cycles, and at the end of each one everybody comes near the surface. An adult turns over and does not remember it. A child checks the room against how it was when they fell asleep, and if something has gone they wake fully to get it back.

This is what Sadeh described as the difference between settling alone and signaling. Not how often they surface — everyone surfaces — but whether what they need to go back down is in the room or down the hall.
